About the Company
Schwan’s Company began with an ice-cream delivery service. In 1952, Marvin Schwan turned his 1946 Dodge panel van into a refrigerated delivery vehicle by packing it up with dry ice. He drove 14 gallons of his family’s signature ice-cream across western Minnesota and sold every last bit of product, thus establishing the Schwan’s home-delivery business. By 1953, Marvin purchased a professional-grade refrigerated vehicle and hired the company’s first route salesman. The first non-dairy product, Vita-Sun, hit the trucks in 1957. Today, Schwan’s continues to operate as a frozen food delivery service and claims to have been doing it since “before it was cool.” The company’s offerings have grown too, to include breakfast foods, pizza, meats, seafood, fruits, vegetables, and more.
