About E. & J. Gallo Winery
E. & J. Gallo Winery is the world's largest family-owned winemaker, thanks in part to value-jug and -box labels Carlo Rossi and Peter Vella. The vintner owns 15 wineries and more than 23,000 acres of California vineyards; it also contracts with other growers statewide to meet its supply needs. It is the leading US exporter of Californian wine, selling upwards of 100 brands, including table and sparkling wines, and imports wines from Argentina, France, Italy, New Zealand, and Spain. The company is vertically integrated, owning its vineyards, sand mines, bottle-making facilities, and manufacturing. E. & J. Gallo Winery, which also makes spirits, was established in 1933 and is still owned and run by the family.
E&J Gallo Winery aims to fuel growth through acquisitions, partnerships, and product development. In 2019 it agreed a landmark deal with Consellation Brands to acquire nearly 35 wine and spirit brands and six wineries in California, Washington, and New York. The brands, including Mark West, Ravenswood, Wild Horse, and Black Bo, are positioned mostly towards the lower-end of the market, providing scope for E&J Gallo scope to develop and invest in the brands. The deal, which has some high regulatory hur/dles to clear, will mark a step-change in E&J Gallo's scale.
Internally, E&J Gallo has smartened up its IT infrastructure, including transitioning to a bespoke software platform, Wine OS. The software facilitates E&J Gallo's omnichannel operation, bringing together Salesforce, Elastic Path, Drupal, a digital content hub, CMS, and point of sale platforms. The company has also deployed analytics to improve harvesting and liberated data from siloed spreadsheets to readily available information usable across E&J Gallo's tech organization.
Mergers and Acquisitions
E&J Gallo agreed to acquire 34 of Constellation Brands' wine and spirits brands in 2019 in a deal worth $1.7 billion. The greatly expands E&J Gallo's product portfolio, particularly among the lower end of the market. Regulatory hurdles have delayed the deal, which is expected to close in late 2019.
