One of the nation's leading makers of organic frozen and prepared foods, it makes and markets more than 250 meals and other food items using all-natural and organic ingredients. It provides options for gluten free, vegan, dairy free, and corn free, among other alternatives. Products include frozen entrees (including pizzas, pocket sandwiches, pot pies, snacks, toaster pops, and veggie burgers), as well as canned soups, beans, chili, jarred pasta sauces, and salsa. Founded in 1987 and owned by the Berliner family, Amy's Kitchen distributes its specialty foods globally through supermarkets, natural food and grocery stores, warehouse clubs, colleges, and online through the likes of
Based in Petaluma, California, Amy's Kitchen caters to US consumers as well as those overseas. It sells directly to about 25 countries, including Australia, Canada, China, Germany, France, Israel, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Thailand, the UK, and the United Arab Emirates.
The company has kitchen locations in California (Santa Rosa), Idaho (Pocatello), and Oregon (Medford).
With its 30-plus-year history, Amy's is well-positioned to continue to capitalize on the growing consumer trend toward healthier, all-natural food options. To keep pace with its expanding line of products (2017 saw the introductions of barbecue pizza, roasted poblano enchiladas, and spinach lasagna, among other items), the company is building an East Coast-based kitchen in Goshen, New York, and an European kitchen in Portugal. It is also exploring India as a possible new market and evaluating the best location for a facility there.
Amy's is also expanding, albeit slowly, into fast-food restaurants. It has one restaurant, Amy's Drive Thru, in Rohnert Park, California, and in 2018 plans to open its second in the state, in Corte Madera.
A key concern for the company is maintaining a robust supply chain for organic vegetables and other food items. As Amy's grows and faces more intense competition from much larger packaged food companies moving forcefully into the organic market, building out the supply chain will take a great deal of time, effort, and expense.
Founded by Rachel and Andy Berliner, Amy's Kitchen was named after their daughter, Amy. Its first product was a vegetarian pot pie.
