About Cboe Bats, LLC

BATS could stand for Better Alternative Trading System since BATS Global Markets' mission is "making markets better." BATS is one of the largest US equity securities and options exchanges. Operating the BZX and BYX exchanges, the firm holds more than 10% of the US equity market. BATS's Chi-X Europe equity options exchange is a leading exchange in Europe, trading in 25 European indices with more than 20% of the market. Since the company owns and operates the technology at the core of its trading systems, it sees its technological expertise as the differentiating factor for its business. BATS was formed in 2005 as an alternative to NYSE. Chicago-based exchange firm CBOE Holdings bought BATS for some $3.2 billion.

In the US, BATS operates four stock exchanges -- BZX, BYX, EDGX and EDGA. The company is an important listing venue for exchange-traded funds and other structured products and also operates BATS Options, a US equity options market.

In Europe, BATS operates the largest pan-European equities exchange.

Geographic Reach

BATS has offices in Kansas City, Missouri (headquarters); New York City; and London. It operates in 15 major European markets.

Sales and Marketing

Customers of BATS include retail brokers, broker-dealers, institutional investors, and professional traders.

With its world-class proprietary technology and relentless customer focus, BATS strives to bring efficiency, transparency and fairness to market participants.

Its strategy going forward includes developing new products and expanding geographically, moving into markets such as Brazil.

To bring more competitive pricing to more participants, in 2014 BATS Chi-X Europe introduced a new pricing model on its CXE Lit Order Book in response to higher market volumes.

That year BATS selected Equinix as its primary data center provider for all of the BATS exchange platforms, including the Direct Edge Exchanges -- EDGA and EDGX.

In 2012 it launched nine new exchange-traded funds from Blackrock.

To improve internal technology process, BATS opened a new Chicago location for its secondary data center in 2012. It also migrated the Chi-X order books to its own BATS technology platform.

Mergers and Acquisitions

To increase its capital and portfolio, in 2014 BATS merged with Direct Edge, a US-based global exchange operator. The two companies combined under the BATS brand.
