About the Company

Prudential was founded in 1875. Originally called The Widows and Orphans Friendly Society, it initially sold burial insurance. Since being formed, Prudential has shown its resilience to challenging events, including The Spanish influenza and the Great Depression. Much of its early success is due in part to the industrial expansion and the growing need to insure factory workers. Prudential has had a long history of acquisitions, including CIGNA Corporation’s retirement business and The Hartford’s life insurance business.
