About Sony Pictures Television Inc.

Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) is a movie-making monster. The producer of Godzilla is a unit of Sony Corporation of America, the US arm of Japanese electronics giant Sony. It operates Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group, which includes Columbia Pictures (big budget films); Screen Gems (midsized budget); Sony Pictures Classics (small budget); and marketing and acquisitions unit TriStar Pictures. Its film library contains more than 3,500 titles, including classics such as Bridge on the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia . Other holdings include operations devoted to TV (Sony Pictures Television), DVDs (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment), digital production (Sony Digital Production), and online video (Crackle).

Geographic Reach

SPE distributes content in approximately 160 countries throughout the globe.

Strategy

This company defrays the high costs of production and distribution by partnering with other movie studios.

Mergers and Acquisitions

In 2019 Sony acquired AT&T's 42% stake in Game Show Network in a transaction worth a total value of $500 million. The deal gives Sony 100% ownership of the GSN, whose offerings are anchored by its namesake cable network that airs classic shows such as Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune as well as newer original programming and mobile and online games. Sony is integrating Game Show Network into the Sony Pictures Entertainment portfolio to add more content to its lineup. It purchased the company from AT&T, which is using the proceeds to pay down debt and generate cash from non-strategic assets.
