Sundt has put its stamp on the Southwest. Through Sundt Construction and other subsidiaries, The Sundt Companies offers preconstruction, construction management, general contracting, and design/build services for commercial, government, and industrial clients. Projects include commercial buildings, military bases, light rails, airports, and schools. It builds mostly in Arizona, Nevada, California, New Mexico, and Texas. Sundt has overseen some notable projects including the development of the top-secret town of Los Alamos, New Mexico (where the first atomic bomb was built) and the relocation of the London Bridge to Arizona. Sundt Companies was formed in 1998 as a holding company for various company interests.
The Sundt Companies performs its work through various divisions: Industrial; concrete; building; heavy civil; and federal. The building division is divided into geographic regions: California; Southwest; and Texas; as well as a Federal Division.
Like its peers, Sundt is dealing with the lingering effects of the construction downturn that greatly impacted the Southwest. (The company lost more than $750 million in government projects due to state budget constraints.) Indeed, Sundt anticipates that it may be 2015 before it sees a strong economy for construction. In the meantime, the firm has relied on a healthy backlog of projects and diversification efforts to sustain its business. To that end, it entered new geographic markets in 2012, including New Mexico, where it is building new dorms at New Mexico State University. It also recently began construction of new schools in El Paso, Texas, its first in the city. The firm formed a new Criminal Justice Specialization group in 2012 to win courthouse and detention facility work.
Sundt also has focused on making investments in improving technology used in the preconstruction and construction process. It also grew its self-perform work capabilities when it acquired Foley Masonry and Tile Inc. in 2010. Also that year Sundt opened a new office in San Antonio as part of the company's growth plan. The company expanded once again in 2011. It opened new offices to support projects in New Mexico, North Carolina, and Texas.
