About Mitchell International, Inc.

Mitchell International helps insurance companies and car repair shops in North America figure the cost of getting a vehicle and injured motorists from wreck to recovery. The company develops software used to manage collision and medical claims, parts and labor estimates, and glass replacement quotes. Its applications are used to manage damage assessments and automate service procurement. Mitchell's WorkCenter product is tailored for casualty insurance claims, while its ClaimIQ product is used for medical claims. The company is owned by Stone Point Capital, a private equity firm, which bought it from KKR in 2018.

Operations

Mitchell's business units include Auto Physical Damage Division, Auto Casualty Solutions Division, Workers' Compensation Division, and NHQ Negotiation Services Division.

The Genex division offers clinical tools that include case management, utilization review, independent medical reviews, and disability management.

Geographic Reach

Mitchell is based in San Diego, California, and has offices in Texas, Utah, Alabama, Oregon, and Ontario. Its products are used in the US, the Americas, Europe, and Asia.

Sales and Marketing

Mitchell processes about 10 million transactions a year for more than 300 insurance companies and more than 30,000 collision repair facilities.

Its customers have included AAA Northern California and Imperial Fire & Casualty.

Strategy

Mitchell has added medical-related capabilities to its systems through acquisitions.

The biggest addition was when the company merged with Genex, bringing that company’s products and services for the casualty market to Mitchell’s portfolio. Stone Point Capital bought Mitchell in 2018 and merged Mitchell with its portfolio company, Genex.

The acquisitions of Medical Consultants Network in 2018 and UniMed Direct in 2017 also bolstered Mitchell’s medical coverage.

Mergers and Acquisitions

In 2019 the Genex division acquired Excel Managed Care & Disability Services, a provider of occupational and non-occupational medical case management, utilization review, and return-to-work services for the workers’ compensation and disability markets. Financial terms were not disclosed. The deal adds to Genex’s number of employee case managers and widens its geographic reach, particularly along the West Coast.

In 2018 Mitchell acquired Medical Consultants Network, a provider of independent medical exam services in the US. The combined Mitchell and MCN product and services are composed of extensive claims datasets and analytics used to develop decision support and risk scores to aid in the identification of claims in which an independent medical exam or peer review might be warranted.

In 2017 Mitchell acquired UniMed Direct, a provider of managed care software and physician peer review services to the workers’ compensation industry. The deal built on the companies’ existing alliance to enhance the capabilities of Mitchell’s workers’ compensation and medical management offerings.

Company Background

Mitchell International was founded in 1946 by Glenn Mitchell when he created a parts catalog for collision repair estimating. The company was once part of The Thomson Corporation (now Thomson Reuters). Mitchell was acquired by private equity firm Hellman & Friedman in 2000, then sold to Aurora Capital Group in 2007 for about $500 million. KKR bought the company in 2013 and sold it to Stone Point Capital in 2018.
