Strategy
Hyland Software has set its sights on overtaking
Hyland has pushed its software to the cloud and, in early 2017, introduced its second cloud-based product in a year. The company developed the new product, AirBase, to provide customers with a simple, secure cloud-based document management application. Hyland isn't new to cloud computing, having hosted applications in the cloud for more than a decade. In 2017, it opened two data centers in New Zealand to support cloud customers. Overall, Hyland's cloud infrastructure stores more than 4.3 billion documents - totaling more than 1.7 petabytes of data.
Hyland prepared for growth 2017. It began work on adding a 70,000-sq.-ft wing for research and development to its Ohio headquarters building and expected to increase its 2,300 member workforce by 300 employees.
Mergers and Acquisitions
Hyland Software has consistently expanded its products and markets via acquisition and that practice continues under the Thoma Bravo ownership. In 2017, Hyland acquired the Perceptive Software business from Lexmark International through the auspices of Thoma Bravo. Perceptive was part of Lexmark's Enterprise Software business. The Perceptive assets, which include Perceptive Intelligent Capture, Acuo VNA, PACSGEAR, and Enterprise Medical Image Viewing, complement Hyland's products and services. Other parts of the Lexmark software unit were set up as a separate company within Thoma Bravo. The reported value of the deal was about $1.5 billion.
In 2015, the company bought LawLogix, a software company specializing in cloud-based immigration and compliance software. Hyland made the deal to strengthen its position as the largest privately held enterprise content management provider.
In 2016, Hyland acquired AcroSoft enterprise content management (ECM) business from Interactive Intelligence Inc. AcroSoft offers ECM-focused software for the insurance market. The acquisition adds about 50 insurance organizations to Hyland's insurance business.
