About Pillar Data Systems, Inc.

What do you get if you give Larry Ellison's wallet to a bunch of IBM alums with data storage expertise? A maker of network data storage systems, Pillar Data Systems was heavily backed by Oracle's billionaire CEO Larry Ellison's via his Tako Ventures investment firm before Oracle acquired the entire company in 2011. The Pillar Axiom enterprise storage system incorporates both network-attached storage (NAS) and storage area network (SAN) functionality. Pillar Data Systems also offers software, including applications for file replication, volume replication, and thin provisioning. The company also provides related services for SAN and NAS implementation, data protection, data migration, and backup and recovery.

Strategy

Oracle bought the company to expand its data storage holdings, with an eye toward providing clients with more complete hardware systems to run its enterprise database applications and other software.

Company Background

Established in 1993 as an Israel-based think tank called Digital Appliance, the company changed its name to Pillar Data Systems in 2001; it closed its Israeli operations in 2002.
