The parent company owns and operates electricity distribution networks in upstate New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. It offers electricity and gas services in 26 counties in Upstate New York; in Nassau and Suffolk counties, in Long Island, New York; in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island, in Metro New York; and as well as customers in Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.

Strategy
In a bid to lower demand and carbon emissions, the company is pursuing a strategy of offering rebates to customer who replace old inefficient gas appliances (heaters, furnaces) with new, efficient ones. Niagara Mohawk Power is looking to have customers cut their energy consumption by 3%. The customer benefits through a cash incentive and by cost savings in the long run. It is also introducing smart grid technology (automated meters) to improve the efficiency of its power distribution operations.
In 2013 it added 29,925 new gas heating customers (most switching from more expensive electric service).

Niagara Mohawk Holdings (the immediate parent of Niagara Mohawk Power) was acquired by National Grid in 2002. National Grid USA transmits and distributes electricity and natural gas to more than 6.7 million customers in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Rhode Island.
The Holdings company was formed in 1937 to serve primarily rural and upstate power customers in New York State.
