About Etihad Airways

Etihad Airways keeps the United Arab Emirates (UAE) connected with the world's big cities. As a commercial airline based in Abu Dhabi, Etihad Airways serves more than 85 destinations in 55 countries in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East; destinations include London, Moscow, Mumbai, Damascus, Kuwait, and Islamabad. The airline also offers North American services in New York and Toronto. Etihad Airways' fleet consists of nearly 80 Airbus and Boeing aircraft, including 22 wide-body A330s and 16 wide-body 777-300s. Etihad Airways also operates a cargo services division. The airline was founded in 2003 by a royal decree issued by a member of Abu Dhabi's royal family.

Etihad Airways owns an 11% stake in Virgin Australia and is looking to increase its share to 20% in 2013. Virgin Australia and Etihad together operate nearly 30 flights a week between Abu Dhabi and Australia. The company also has partnerships with Kenya Airways and codeshare agreements with Korean Air, South African Airways, and several other airlines.

Mergers and Acquisitions

In 2013 the airline acquired a 49% stake in Jat Airways, Serbia's largest airline. The deal included a 5-year management contract with the airline. Etihad, in partnership with the Serbian government, will revamp Jat Airways' operations in 2014, giving the airline new destinations in Eastern Europe, Northern Africa, and the Middle East, as well as a new fleet and a new name (Air Serbia).
