Sun World International enjoys the fruits of its labor. Founded in 1976, it develops, grows, and markets more than 75 varieties of fruits and vegetables, including table grapes, citrus, red and yellow sweet peppers, seedless watermelon, and stone fruit. While its farming and packing operations are located in California, the company also sources produce from partners in Mexico, South America, Europe, and South Africa. It boasts more than 10,000 acres of farmland and 950 domestic and international licensed partner growers. Specialty products include Sun World seedless watermelons, Midnight Beauty and Scarlotta seedless grapes, Amber Crest peaches, and Honeycot apricots. Renewable Resources Group owns Sun World.

Change in Company Type

Since August 2013, Sun World has been owned by Renewable Resources Group, Inc., a California-based asset management firm that specializes in agriculture and other sustainable resources.

The firm filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2003. Former owner, agriculture and water development firm Cadiz, bought the company in 1976 but sold it to Sun World's creditors (mainly institutional bond holders) in 2004. Black Diamond Capital Management acquired Sun World's assets for about $128 million in 2005.

Sun World operates one of the world's largest and most successful fruit-breeding programs. Its more than 10,000 acres of farmland spans Arvin, Bakersfield, Blythe, Coachella, and Oxnard, California. The company maintains offices in Australia, Chile, Italy, Mexico, and South Africa to oversee its 950 domestic and international licensed partner growers.

Geographic Reach

California-based Sun World also has offices in Italy, Australia, Chile, Mexico, and South Africa.

Sales and Marketing

Sun World leverages newsletters, Facebook, and its website to market its company's products.

In 2013 Sun World announced a new strategic push that involved adding three new company departments to support its plans to expand its staff expertise and production capabilities. To this end, the company added new departments: logistics and transportation, innovation and special projects, and corporate responsibility. Additionally, it is planting its new proprietary grape varieties in the Coachella Valley and San Joaquin Valley.

As Sun World aims to exceed food safety and quality standards, the company in 2013 enlisted the help of Lotpath, a software apps provider, to manage its fresh produce inspections, crop estimates, and food safety inspections. As a result, Sun World has real-time visibility throughout its supply chain. It's also using FoodLink item-level traceability technology for its seedless grapes and sweet peppers, rolling out the technology to the rest of its produce.
