About Diamond Blue Growers

Almond cooperative Blue Diamond Growers is a top global player in the tree nut market. More than 3,000 California almond growers belong to the cooperative, which sells almonds and almond products to food and candy makers, the food service industry, and retail food stores. Its offerings include classic snack almonds in a variety of flavors, gourmet seasoned almonds, almond and fruit mixes, almond crackers, and Almond Breeze almond-based milk, creamer, and yogurt. Blue Diamond sells its products throughout the US and in more than 80 other countries. It has a handful of nut and gift retail shops in California.

Operations

Blue Diamond Growers has four main product lines: classic snack almonds, crafted snack almonds, Almond Breeze, and Nut-Thins.

The classic and crafted lines include mostly whole almonds flavored with herbs, spices, and seasonings or mixed with fruit. The Almond Breeze brand includes lactose-free milk substitute and creamers, as well as almond-based yogurt alternatives. The company provides a line of rice and almond snack crackers under the Nut-Thins name.

Geographic Reach

Blue Diamond Growers ships its products to more than 80 countries across the globe. Major global markets in Australia, Canada, China, Finland, France, Germany, India, Japan, Korea, Spain, Thailand, UAE, and the UK.

The Sacramento, California-based cooperative has two other campuses in the northern part of the state, one in Salida and one in Turlock.

Sales and Marketing

Blue Diamond Growers sells its products to food manufacturers and customers in the food service industry. It also sells through grocery stores, drug stores, and other physical retail locations, as well as online through its own website, Amazon.com, and other sites.

Financial Performance

Blue Diamond Growers reported revenue of $1.6 billion in fiscal 2018 (ended August), up 6% from the prior year.

Strategy

Blue Diamond Growers follows a strategy of offering new high-margin almond products. To that end, it has introduced more than 60 new consumer and industrial products in the past half dozen years, including the expansion of its crafted almond lineup in 2019 (Sweet Cardamom and Honeycrisp Apple anyone?) and the introduction of almond oil and almond protein powder in 2018. To enable the innovation, the cooperative is currently expanding its Turlock, California, plant.

Continued expansion outside the US is also a key element for Blue Diamond's growth. In 2019 it established a partnership with Mexican food producer Grupo Lala to strengthen the Almond Breeze brand in that country. The previous year the cooperative launched Almond Breeze almondmilk in Brazil, added two new almondmilk flavors in Thailand, and introduced Almond Breeze yogurt in Spain.

Company Background

Blue Diamond Growers traces its history to the founding of the California Almond Growers Exchange by 230 growers in 1910. It 1915 it adopted the blue diamond -- the rarest in the world -- as its symbol and later as its brand name. The cooperative officially changed its name to Blue Diamond Growers in 1980.
