Founded in 1907, Moore Stephens LLP has grown over the years through mergers with smaller firms (such as its 2006 marriage with Macnair Mason), but the majority of its growth has been of the organic variety. This is understandable, given the firm’s philosophy: to respond to clients' needs whenever required, without growing for the sake of size alone.
Moore Stephens LLP belongs to Moore Stephens International, a leading international accounting and consulting associations outside the Big Four. The association comprises 647 offices of member and correspondent firms in 98 countries worldwide, employing over 21,000 partners, principals and staff.
Moore Stephens LLP has a significant international client base. In addition to ensuring delivery of compliance services, it advises on international business structures and tax issues, with the aim of finding solutions for cross-border transactions. It also offers companies tailored advice on international and local tax implications, both in response to, and in anticipation of, changes in tax environments. Clients are assigned a client liaison partner, who generally attend an initial meeting and arrange the provision of services and advice. Services the firm offers include audit, business recovery and rescue, corporate finance, forensic accounting, governance and risk, IT consultancy, outsourcing, personal debt solutions, tax, trusts and estates, VAT and wealth management. It provides advice on a range of sectors, spanning industries such as insurance, shipping, financial, real estate, not-for-profit and international business. It is also one of the few leading accountancy firms specialising in the energy and mining sector, which it regards as a particular strength.
Going where the ships go
Moore Stephens’s association with the shipping industry began in London in the 1930s, when the firm first began to act for the Greek shipping agents that were trying to establish a presence in the UK. After World War II, Moore Stephens’ services developed to meet shipping clients’ ever-expanding needs and greatly contributed to the firm’s international growth. In fact, offices abroad were set up specifically for its shipping clients and later diversified to offer the firm’s broader range of professional services. Through member firms of Moore Stephens, it currently provides compliance and advisory services to a significant part of the global shipping community.
