From campus to an organization that emphasizes well-being
For Lalita Yang, working at Deloitte has allowed her to accomplish a few things: deliver value to her clients through her audit work, while ensuring she maintains a healthy work-life balance. As a spring 2013 graduate from UCLA, Lalita found her way to Deloitte after going through the on-campus recruiting process. She recently took time to talk to Vault about her experiences.
How long have you been with Deloitte?
Lalita: I've been with Deloitte for five years: the first three in a traditional role within the Audit & Assurance practice and the last two within the Audit Analytics group.
What is your title and role with Deloitte Audit & Assurance?
Lalita: My title is Audit & Assurance Analytics Specialist Senior, Deloitte & Touche LLP. I work on a variety of projects that range from supporting audit engagement teams as an Audit Analytics Specialist, to participating in strategic internal projects, as well as supporting pursuits for new Audit clients.
What is a typical day like? Is there one?
Lalita: There isn’t a typical day per se, as the type of work changes depending on the project. In the planning stages of a project, I’m collaborating with the audit team to understand the client and the audit purpose of analytics to see how I can help. During execution, I’m working with tools to create visualizations that help audit teams better understand client data. I also help find new ways to design audit procedures that may be more efficient or provide insights by using analytics.
What is the coolest thing you’ve worked on to date at Deloitte?
Lalita: I think the coolest project I’ve worked on at Deloitte was building out a standardized tool to be used for Deloitte healthcare provider audit teams. I was able to work (and network) with different audit teams to understand their clients’ business processes and how the audit teams have historically tested an account balance, then was able to take that knowledge and build out a tool that multiple audit teams can use in their audits. It’s gratifying to hear success stories from audit teams that have used the tool in their audit work.
What is the culture like at Deloitte? What is it like to work there?
Lalita: I love the culture at Deloitte! The organization truly values and prioritizes its people. Everyone I have worked with has been kind, supportive, and extremely intelligent. I also appreciate that Deloitte emphasizes and promotes our well-being. Leadership in the West Region regularly distributes an e-mail with a calendar of events available to professionals that include a variety of different type of events. Through this, I’ve been fortunate enough to attend a handful of free indoor cycling classes! Working at Deloitte is great because you are surrounded by ambitious professionals who challenge you to grow and can be resources to you as you pursue developmental goals.
What was your background/education prior to joining the Deloitte?
Lalita: I started at Deloitte right after I graduated from UCLA in 2013 with a BA in Business Economics and a Minor in Accounting.
What was the most unexpected thing you’ve learned while at Deloitte?
Lalita: When I first started at Deloitte, I didn’t expect to receive as much soft skills training as I did. As an auditor who interacted with clients on a daily basis, I learned how to speak to clients and to be a better communicator across different channels of communication, as well as enhance my listening skills. I also enjoyed learning about ways to help me understand my own communication and working style and help identify the styles of others. Having this skill helps me develop strong and positive relationships with both colleagues and clients.
Where do you hope your experience will take you/lead you to?
Lalita: I would love to be in a position to help clients address business problems by using data and analytics. I appreciate that my experiences at Deloitte taught me to quickly grasp how business processes work, to understand data and to use different tools for analytics and visualization.
How do you maintain work-life fit?
Lalita: I schedule time to work out and I stick with it. It’s important to me to make time for my health and well-being. As additional motivation, I sign up for work out classes that have a cancellation fee for canceling within 12 hours prior to class. On weekends, I typically unplug and spend time exploring Los Angeles with friends or pursuing other interests!
What do you like to do in your personal time?
Lalita: Outside of work, I’m taking self-paced classes on different data science subjects (statistics, machine learning, etc.) and also learning how to code in a new coding language. When I want to decompress, you can find me reading, catching up with my favorite shows, or spending time with friends.
