This year’s rankings saw tremendous shifts, with seven new firms breaking into the top 10 for 2021.

Vault’s 2021 top 10 Best Midsize Law Firms to Work For are:

  1. Harrity & Harrity LLP
  2. Lightfoot, Franklin & White LLC
  3. Bookoff McAndrews PLLC
  4. Smyser Kaplan & Veselka, L.L.P.

Taking the rankings by storm, Harrity & Harrity ranked in all but one midsize quality of life category—clinching the No. 1 spot in seven rankings (including one tie) in addition to its gold medal in the overall ranking.

“Harrity & Harrity showed up strong in its freshman year in Vault’s rankings, placing among the top 10 in 12 of the ranking categories,” said Mary Kate Sheridan, Vault’s Senior Law Editor. “Associates at the firm were pleased across the board—from diversity to hours to transparency.”

Overall Best Midsize Firms to Work For Methodology

The Best Midsize Firms to Work For rankings are derived from Vault’s Law Firm Associate Survey, in which associates at midsize firms—those with approximately 150 attorneys or fewer—rated and commented on various aspects of their work life. The rankings were calculated using a formula that weighs associate ratings in 11 different areas: Overall Satisfaction (25%); Firm Culture (10%); Hours (10%); Compensation (10%); Quality of Work (10%); Informal Training, Mentoring & Sponsorship (10%); Associate/Partner Relations (5%); Business Outlook (5%); Career Outlook (5%); and Formal Training (5%); and Transparency (5%).

Vault Introduces Three New Midsize Law Firm Quality of Life Rankings

This year, Vault introduced three new quality of life rankings—Associate/Partner Relations, Transparency, and Wellness—resulting in 13 midsize Quality of Life rankings in addition to its Overall Best Midsize Law Firms to Work For ranking.

“Many midsize firms offer lean staffing, and opportunities abound for direct partner contact, making the relationships between partners and associates a particularly important factor for candidates considering midsize firms—including how transparent management is,” said Sheridan. “Wellness is another key factor given lawyers’ workloads, coupled with the high rates of depression and substance abuse in the legal industry—well-developed wellness resources can have a tremendous effect on a lawyer’s well-being.”

Two midsize firms stood out from the rest, placing in all 13 categories, as well as the overall ranking: Lightfoot, Franklin & White and Smyser Kaplan & Veselka.

Almost every Midsize Quality of Life ranking saw a shake-up at the top this year, aside from three categories: Susman Godfrey LLP reclaimed its top spot in Career Outlook, Compensation, and Selectivity—and also came out on top in the new Midsize Transparency ranking.

In determining the Top 150 Under 150, Vault first developed a list of the best-known and most sought-after U.S. firms with fewer than 150 attorneys. Our editorial and research teams pored through Vault survey data, news stories, trade journals, and other legal publications; spoke with lawyers in the field; and reviewed other published rankings. Vault editors also assessed each firm for prestige, quality of life, and professional growth opportunities. Then we narrowed the results to produce a list of 150 law firms known for providing top-notch service and delivering big results.
