The Speech Pathologist's job is to work with patients on long and short-term rehab. Job duties include helping patients with dysphasia improve and get a handle on their condition, helping patients with dementia converse more easily, working with people who have hearing conditions to improve their communication skills, and putting together "discharge plans" to give patients their independence. The interpreter translates for patients and their families. He/she should be fluent, speak clearly, work well under pressure, and be kind and open. The interpreter should respond to requests for translation within 15 minutes and should not give his/her opinion or advice. As skill allows, the interpreter may also be asked for a written translation. The interpreter is especially responsible for moving along the line of those waiting for translation/interpretation.
