And then there were two (cool accounting firms). In the final game of GoingConcern's NCAA Tournament-like competition to determine the "coolest" accounting firm in America, the Seattle-based 8th-seated Moss Adams will take on the New Jersey-headquartered 14th-seated Rothstein Kass (the seating for the tournament was determined by Vault's latest Accounting Rankings).
In the previous round, Moss Adams edged out Chicago bean counters Grant Thornton, while Rothstein Kass murdered McGladrey & Pullen.
If last year's overall Vault Accounting 50 rankings are any indication of how the championship contest will turn out, Rothstein Kass should have the upper hand. RK ranked as the 3rd best accounting firm to work for, while Moss Adams ranked 6th. However, Moss Adams did rank higher than RK in terms of one important category: prestige. Moss Adams ranked 8th in prestige, while RK ranked 14th.
Noticeably absent from the Final Four Coolest Firms were KPMG, PwC, Ernst & Young and Deloitte. All of these firms lost in the first round of the tournament, which has shown that the Big 4 are largely seen as stodgy, old-fashioned, slow-moving, overly starched-shirted companies. That is, they are very uncool.
