7 Career Lessons I Learned from Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Published: Sep 28, 2020

 Career Readiness       Networking

When the pandemic first hit and we were all sheltering in place, we had to find new forms of for entertainment. You might’ve started exploring board games, binge-watching TV shows, or—if you are like me—started playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Nintendo). If you're unfamiliar with this game, each player starts on a deserted island that they can develop using tools and skills that they earn or build. Players can earn currency; build homes, shops, and museums; and interact with villagers, merchants, and other players.

The game was an instant hit, capturing the consoles of players all over the world, selling 13 million copies in the first six weeks after release. If you've played it, you'll understand the hype. The freedom to create an ideal world is very entertaining and empowering, and some learnings translate to real life. For example, there are parallels between building your perfect island and working toward your long-term career goals:

  1. You can learn a lot from your peers, so its important to network
  2. The more skills you have, the more attractive you are to an employer
  3. Say "yes" to opportunities
  4. Find your niche
  5. Have a plan, and build on it
  6. Be patient
  7. Celebrate your successes

It may be hard to believe that you can learn so much from a game, but the most impactful career lessons often come from the most unexpected places. Whether you learn multitasking skills from your children, self-advocacy skills from social media, or even networking skills from video games, each lesson can help you build the career of your dreams.
