One burgeoning area is strategic sustainability consulting, which takes the standard strategy consulting model—aiming to transform businesses at the basic level of strategy—and adds a new twist: sustainability.

The goal is to help companies find business opportunities in sustainability, according to Polina Feldman, an associate consultant at Blu Skye Sustainability, which counsels corporations like Wal-mart and Microsoft. Although there are not yet many firms focused on this sort of consulting, Ms. Feldman points out that her firm has enjoyed booming business, hiring people even during the current recession.
