THE SCOOP
A Boston institution since 1865, Ropes & Gray has expanded in every measurable way in the 21st century, acquiring smaller boutique firms in the States while claiming new turf in Asia. Few firms have been as aggressive in recent years as this quintessential New England white-shoe outfit, as Ropes & Gray has adapted to law's accelerated globalization by bolstering practice areas such as intellectual property and private equity through mergers and partner heists.
Branching out from Beantown
John Codman Ropes and John Chipman Gray, a couple of Harvard Law School grads, founded the firm after each had already made a name for himself on the Boston legal scene. While building the firm into one of the largest and most powerful in Massachusetts, the Johns simultaneously carved out continued independent success: Ropes proceeded to become an assistant U.S. attorney, while Gray was a highly influential teacher at Harvard Law School for four decades. GTS also provides investor reporting and other back office support for investment management companies. To put it simply this is a very easy job. The work load is pretty low. The hours are 8:30 - 5. You might have to stay to six or seven once in a while, but most days you will only have enough work to keep you busy for about 4 - 6 hours. The culture is friendly, but employees do not have much input in how they do their job. Management makes decisions in closed door meetings with little to no employee input. Advancement is based on solely on seniority. They do not expect employees to take on extra work and do not reward the employees that work extra hours and go to extra training.
