Originally Farmers Mutual Insurance Company, American Family Insurance was founded in 1927 by insurance salesman Herman Wittwer. Though it began solely as an auto insurance company, AFI now offers everything from food to restaurant insurance, as well as financial product lines in 19 states. AFI is the nation’s third-largest mutual property and casualty insurer, with $16.3 billion in assets and $4.8 billion in policyholder equity.
