Born as the Washington National Building Loan and Investment Association in 1889, today Washington Mutual (or WaMu as it is popularly called) is known for its customer service and patented Occasio teller stations. In 2008, WaMu experienced what is perhaps the worst bank failure in history. Luckily, it was acquired by JPMorgan Chase in an emergency deal brokered by the U.S. federal government.
