Dating back to 1842, the Wadsworth Atheneum is the oldest continuously operating public art museum in the United States—and one of its more innovative. It was the first American museum to collect contemporary American Art. The museum is home to more than 50,000 works of art, including the Hudson River School paintings, as well as a range of American art, contemporary art, costumes and textiles, European Art, and more. Among the artists featured at the Wadsworth Atheneum are Caravaggio, Dalí, Matisse, Monet, Picasso, Rauschenberg, Sherman, Van Gogh, and Warhol.
