The Nature Conservancy lives by its motto: “To preserve the plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive.” Since its founding in 1951, the Nature Conservancy has preserved well over 100 million acres of land and gained approximately one million members. Some of the lands it protects include Cumberland Marsh and the Virginia Coast Reserve in southeast Virginia.
