The National Institutes of Health (NIH)—an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services—is made up of 27 separate institutes and centers, each of which focuses on a different area of research. NIH is the world’s largest biomedical research institution. 80% of its budget funds more than 30,000 research personnel at over 3,000 universities and institutions and the Institute also employs about 6,000 scientists in its own labs. Current research focuses on such diverse areas as genomics, imaging and bioterrorism defense.
