Executive Q&A from Nomura International Plc (Europe)
FAQs
Which divisions are hiring graduates in 2012?
Investment banking, global markets and corporate infrastructure. Opportunities are available in London as well as other European locations.
Does Nomura offer internship programs?
Yes, we offer 10 week programs which take place in the winter, spring and summer. We also offer a 6 month winter internship in our investment banking division. Many of our regional offices in continental Europe offer 3-6 month internship programs year-round.
In addition, we have 6-12 month industrial placements available in finance, operations and technology divisions.
Does Nomura offer any Insight programs?
For first year students (or second year students on a four year course), we have the Explore Program, designed to give you early insight into the world of investment banking. There is also the Women's Immersion program, a 2-week insight work experience over Easter which offers first-hand exposure to our investment banking, global markets and corporate infrastructure divisions.
Which academic qualifications must I have?
We encourage applications from all disciplines and look for candidates who have, or expect a minimum 2.1 (or equivalent) in their degree program. It is essential that you're numerate, with an interest in finance and a desire to work in the investment banking industry.
May I apply to more than one division?
Yes. You can apply for up to three divisions. However, you should do as much research as possible beforehand. It's important to understand which business area would best match your skill set and interests. We will expect you to be able to discuss your choice, and show both enthusiasm for, and knowledge of the various roles.
What should I expect during the interview process?
If you apply for investment banking and global markets and you're selected for first-round interviews, you will have two (for internships) or three (for full-time positions) one-on-one interviews, which will involve a case study. During the final rounds, you will have four 30-minute, one-on-one interviews with senior business representatives (a banker who is an Executive Director or above). If you apply for corporate infrastructure, the first-round interview stage will be held at an assessment centre, consisting of two one-on-one, 30-minute competency-based interviews, as well as numerical tests and group exercises.
What is Nomura looking for in candidates?
We assess candidates using a range of key competencies which include; problem solving, analytical skills, teamwork, leadership, communication skills, professional presence and initiative. All of these competencies are equally weighted and we look for evidence of these in your CV, cover letter and throughout the interview process. We will also need to be convinced of your interest and commitment to the financial services industry and to Nomura in particular.
I've been accepted for an interview. Do you have any tips?
We want you to do your very best at interview. So take a look at our section on interview tips on our website. In this section, you can complete a mock interview, learn how to tackle a case study and read our guide to interview etiquette.
What are the application deadlines?
