LOS ANGELES

The Los Angeles office of White & Case was established almost 20 years ago in 1984. As an attorney in the Los Angeles office, you will have the opportunity to work on a full range of matters, from Los Angeles based transactions and litigation to matters that span the globe, giving you the opportunity to interact with companies, law firms and other White & Case attorneys around the world. The Los Angeles office provides the benefits and advantages of a large, established firm, a leading international reputation, a broad client base and a sophisticated and innovative practice. Attorneys in our office remark that they enjoy the rapport with and mutual support they receive from fellow attorneys, the close working relationships with both partners and associates, the openness with which questions are answered, the balanced workload, and the respect and attention junior associates receive.

The Los Angeles corporate group represents domestic and foreign financial institutions and corporations in a broad range of financial transactions including corporate and public matters, mergers and acquisitions, securities, lending, leasing and equipment finance, tax, bankruptcy, energy, and financial restructuring. Our corporate attorneys are active in domestic and cross-border transactions, including synthesizing and rationalizing applicable diverse legal regimes. White & Case is one of the world's leading energy and project finance law firms. Our Los Angeles energy group is actively involved in the energy issues confronting Californians. We look for transactional attorneys who will devote themselves to negotiating and closing unique and sophisticated deals.

Our litigation practice includes both foreign and domestic matters in securities and class actions, antitrust, unfair competition, contract, intellectual property, labor and employment, real estate and business disputes, as well as creditor's rights, lender liability, insurance and environmental issues, media and technology, trust and estate, banking and government investigations. Los Angeles litigation attorneys are well versed in legal issues that routinely arise in global litigation. We seek and welcome litigators who are committed to ardently defend clients in court and who thrive on the process and results.

Our summer program is designed to give summer associates the experience of working in a large international law firm. We believe that the skills acquired here will prepare summer associates to flourish in their future endeavors as attorneys. We support and appreciate the development of our attorneys, and that growth begins as a summer associate. Each summer associate is assigned a mentor who will guide him or her through the summer and stay in touch when they return to their law schools. Weekly training programs are provided with topics ranging from "life as a first year associate" to effective legal writing. Each summer associate will spend one half of the summer working with corporate attorneys and the other half with litigators. Our goal is to have each summer associate work with as many attorneys and in as many different areas of the law as possible, thus exposing them to the diversity of our professionals and practices.

We invest heavily in our first-year associates with a view to giving them the training and experience to fully develop their legal and business skills. We expect our associates to develop sensitivity to client relationships, anticipate our clients' needs, learn how to get things done, function effectively as part of a team and be able to assume responsibility on cases and deals at a very early stage of their careers. Technology lets any attorney in the Firm have a career in international law without necessarily traveling or living overseas. The technological linkage among all White & Case offices allows associates, regardless of location, to contribute to worldwide client teams.

All new associates in Los Angeles are eligible to receive four weeks' vacation per calendar year as well as health, dental, vision, life and disability insurance. We cover the cost of the Bar Exam and related preparation course, and also pay for reasonable moving expenses. The salaries for new associates are reviewed every year and, as with the summer associate salaries, they are competitive with other prominent Los Angeles law firms. For the class of 2003, the starting salary is $125,000 per annum. White & Case also awards merit bonuses to associates who distinguish themselves.

White & Case believes that pro bono legal activity is in the public interest as well as in the professional interest of our attorneys. Accordingly, we actively sponsor and encourage participation in pro bono work. In evaluating the performance of associates, time devoted to pro bono matters is considered the equivalent of time spent on matters involving our other practice areas. Some of the many local organizations and institutions in which our Los Angeles attorneys play significant roles include the Inner City Law Center, Harriet Buhai Center for Family Law, Mt. Washington Association, The Alliance for Student Achievement, and The LA Conservancy. Summer associates also have an opportunity to participate in Pro Bono activities. Each year they participate in GRAP, a one-day program through Public Counsel, a public interest law firm. Summer associates are additionally given a chance to learn the fundamentals of Family Court through the Harriett Buhai Center for Family Law, a family law and domestic violence project.
