In January 2012 we represented the acquirer when Ares Corporate Opportunities Fund III, L.P. and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board completed their $1.6 billion acquisition of 99¢ Only Stores and the related $950 million financing. Our IP litigators defend the intellectual capital and creative rights of world-renowned recording artists, Clients of our sports division are none other than the biggest sports leagues in the U.S.-Major League Baseball, the NFL, the NHL and the NBA. Associates are our greatest assets
At Proskauer, our associates are our greatest asset. They represent the trajectory of our firm, and we foster their development as world-class lawyers. As such, we provide ongoing professional training to all, whether summer associates, entering classes or our more experienced players. Whether it involves "shadowing" a Proskauer lawyer, hearing a partner provide insight on a new aspect of the law, or honing skills with an outside consultant or professor, we prepare our associates well for their careers in law. Our summer associates are assigned projects, receive guidance and are evaluated with a focus on skill enhancement and exposure to legal practice at its most sophisticated level. New associates are welcomed with a program carefully designed to introduce them to the Proskauer culture and the challenges inherent in the skillful execution of their jobs, as well as provide them a solid foundation of legal, technical and communications skills. And to bolster our collaborative culture, we support a variety of retreats, as well as cultural, recreational and social events, affording all our associates the opportunity to build long-lasting relationships with one another that will benefit them throughout their legal careers. Many of these activities, i.e., attending major sporting or entertainment events, highlight our firm's unique clients.
Instilling in our lawyers a desire to serve
Proskauer has a long-standing dedication and commitment to pro bono activities, with a major emphasis on providing legal services to the disadvantaged and the poor. That commitment is manifested in our procedures for handling pro bono matters, as well as in the scope and diversity of our pro bono docket. Led by Chair Scott Harshbarger and Firmwide Pro Bono Counsel Stacey O’Haire Fahey, Proskauer's Pro Bono Initiative Committee brings together lawyers from every Proskauer office and every legal department, drawing from all levels of the organization to cultivate the pro bono spirit among lawyers and other staff. In order to introduce new lawyers to the personal and professional satisfaction of handling pro bono work, each first-year associate is assigned his or her own pro bono matter from one of our referral organizations. Our hope is that introducing associates to pro bono work early in their careers will help instill in them a long-term commitment to service.
Our pro bono work includes large matters as well as small, individual clients and not-for-profit organizations, litigated matters as well as transactional. We offer personal planning assistance to people who need wills; we offer labor and tax advice to community groups; and we offer immigration as well as political asylum representation for those in need. We also maintain ongoing referral relationships with many organizations, including The Legal Aid Society, Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, the ACLU, the District of Columbia Bar Association, the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence and Human Rights Watch.
