Executive Q&A from Morrison & Foerster LLP
What are people saying about MoFo?
The American Lawyer
In 2012, we were included in The American Lawyer's annual A-List, marking the ninth consecutive year that the firm has been ranked. The A-List is AmLaw's effort to "look beyond pure dollars to quantify the qualities that define the 20 most successful law firms in America", by scoring firms on four factors: revenue per lawyer, pro bono commitment, diversity among lawyers, and associate satisfaction.
U.S. News & World Report/Best Lawyers
In the 2011 "Best Law Firms" report published by U.S.News & World Report and Best Lawyers, we ranked in the top 10 law firms nationwide - out of more than 9,500 firms - based on the number of top-tier national rankings we earned. This was the second consecutive year the firm finished in the top 10. Our top-tier national rankings included such cornerstone areas as Antitrust Litigation, Appellate, Banking & Finance, Commercial Litigation, Corporate/M&A, Energy, Financial Services Regulation, Intellectual Property Litigation, Securities/Capital Markets, Securities and White-Collar Litigation, Tax, and Technology. We were also named U.S. Law Firm of the Year for Technology Law and Antitrust Litigation, and rank as a top firm in California, with more top-tier rankings than any other firm in the state.
In the 2011 edition of the Financial Times U.S. Innovative Lawyers Report, client feedback put MoFo among the FT Law 25 – a list of the most innovative firms in the U.S. The firm also appeared in two of the report’s practice-specific categories: Corporate Law (for our representation of AmericanWest Bancorp) and Litigation (for our pro bono work on behalf of inner-city students in the Los Angeles Unified School District).
Fortune, Working Mother and Vault
Morrison & Foerster is one of the “100 Best Companies to Work For” according to Fortune magazine and Vault’s Best Firms to Work For (Associate Survey). Working Mother magazine has voted us one of the best places to work, thirteen times.
How diverse is MoFo?
At the present time, over 16 percent of our partners, 40 percent of our associates and 49 percent of our summer associates are lawyers of color. In addition, women comprise over 17 percent of our partners, 46 percent of our associates and 47 percent of our summer associates.
Many of our women lawyers, lawyers of color and gay and lesbian lawyers have held, or currently hold, important management positions within the firm, such as those on the Executive Committee, Board of Directors, Department and Practice Group leaders and various committees.
The Advocate has named us one of the ten most enlightened employers for gays and lesbians five times in the last six years.
MoFo believes that diversity significantly enhances our ability to provide high-quality legal services to our clients and also is one of the reasons why the firm is one of the best places to work in the legal community. Many of our clients have been leaders in actively promoting diversity within their own organizations, and they seek to employ law firms that have demonstrated the same commitment.

What type of training can I expect when I join MoFo?
MoFo believes that the most important training comes from daily partner/associate interaction and that the most effective instruction takes place when associates and partners work closely together on specific projects. The firm's many formal training programs supplement, rather than supplant, one-on-one training.
An annual orientation program introduces all new associates to the firm's policies and procedures, including its finances, history and philosophy. Throughout the year, multiple training sessions are offered in all areas of our practice. Many of these sessions are designed for less-experienced associates; others serve attorneys at more advanced levels.
Summer associates participate in most aspects of their office's activities, including informational and training sessions presented by practice groups. Some offices conduct mock trial training and mock business acquisition transaction programs for the summer associates.
Summer associates typically research and draft memoranda, briefs and pleadings, observe trials and depositions, draft corporate documents and observe negotiations. Whenever possible, we provide summer associates with projects that involve direct participation and a "hands-on" experience in active matters.
