ABOUT THIS COMPANY:
Snapshot
Founded in New York in 1891, Merck discovers, develops, produces and markets vaccines and medicines to treat various medical conditions. Driven by its research, the company sells its products mainly to pharmaceutical wholesalers and retailers, among others, and its product line contains vaccines and medicines in more than 20 therapeutic categories. Merck helped bring about the groundbreaking predecessor to all modern antibiotics: penicillin. The company continues to file drug applications with the FDA and to complement internal research and development (R&D) efforts; the company has cultivated external resources, either through collaborative alliances or through strategic acquisitions of other companies. Merck acquired several biotechnology companies, such as privately held biopharmaceutical company Abrnaxis for approximately $80 million; GlycoFi, a leader in the field of yeast glycoengineering and the optimization of biologic drug molecules, for about $373 million and research-based pharmaceutical company Sirna for approximately $1.1 billion.
