A division of Time Warner, Home Box Office has been a driving force in the cable television industry since it was launched in 1972. Home Box Office founded the second-leading network, Cinemax, in 1980. HBO and Cinemax, the company's two networks, boast nearly 41 million subscribers in the U.S. alone; HBO, which claims 30 million of those subscribers, generates the highest prime-time ratings of all cable networks. HBO also airs over 1,200 movies a year, more than any other premium network.

Home Box Office's original parent, Time, has grown into entertainment conglomerate Time Warner. However, in the wake of its parent company's expansion, HBO has not let the quality of its programming flag. In addition to presenting the cable premieres of films that feature big-name stars, the company also produces original films and miniseries. HBO also continues to produce award-winning original series such as Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Sopranos. The network also broadcasts live concerts from such megastars as Madonna and Janet Jackson, stand-up comedy from Chris Rock, and even sporting events (primarily boxing).
