Before its June 2009 bankruptcy, the behemoth car maker familiarly known as GM (General Motors) sold products in nearly 190 countries, had manufacturing operations in 33 countries and employed approximately a third of a million people worldwide.  (Post-restructuring, that number is considerably smaller.)  The company is also one of the largest industrial enterprises on the planet, designing and manufacturing locomotives and other heavy equipment.  In terms of monthly sales, in the tally for April 2007, Detroit-based General Motors (GM) fell behind Toyota for the first time in the race for the title of world's leading car and truck manufacturer.  The company remains the largest producer for the U.S. market, however.  Its brands include Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, GM Daewoo, Holden, and Vauxhall.  Early in 2009, General Motors stated that the Hummer, Pontiac, Saturn and Saab lines no longer figured in its long-term business plans. Some have already been parceled out, and it's likely that others will disappear, the Saturn brand is scheduled for sunset in 2010.
