Venable LLP Perspective

Getting Hired

Tips from the inside

According to a Washington contact, Venable is looking for “motivated and well-rounded” candidates with a “good law school transcript and good poise.” Though there are specific GPA requirements, associates cite personality as the next most important factor in getting hired. A Baltimore associate describes the hiring process this way: “I was hired after serving as a law clerk. I had two sets of interviews, about 3-4 interviews per set. I believe the firm is looking for intelligent, genuine, hard-working and well-spoken candidates and (significant) experience outside of law school appears to be a plus.” Another Washington source reports that Venable is “recruiting from the top 25 schools in the country, with some exceptions for local NY/CA/MD/VA/DC schools. Top 25% at those schools, law review or other journal usually required, moot court a plus, personable, interesting and dynamic candidates.”

Should I go to Law School?
My time working at a law firm really hasn't convinced me that most of what lawyers do, especially at the more junior levels, really requires much intellectual creativity at all. So, the first part of my question is: how fair do you think this assessment is?This first question is really a subsidiary to the larger question I'm mulling over: should I go to law school?
