Centuries of service

At the top of the James A. Farley building in New York, there’s an inscription that reads, “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.”  Although many people think this is the motto of the U.S. Postal Service (USPS), the words are actually adapted from those of Greek historian Herodotus, who was describing Persian mounted carriers.  In fact, the USPS lacks an official creed or motto.  The postal service does, however, have a goal, which is “to continue to provide affordable, high-quality mail service to everyone in America—today and well into the future.”  For two centuries, the agency has been processing and delivering more than 213 billion bits of mail to homes and businesses annually.  It is an operation independent of the Executive Branch of the U.S. government and is the second oldest federal agency in the United States.  It is also the country’s biggest employer with almost 700,000 career employees and more than 100,000 noncareer workers.
