SURVEY SAYS

Labor of love

DreamWorks SKG is a "very young," "exciting" company where every one strives to keep up with "current Hollywood gossip" and "the latest innovations in technology." No one complains about the "lackluster" salaries, because the "dazzling" prestige of the company and its founders leaves even the "media-savvy" employees "constantly starstruck." According to one insider, "Pay is average because so many people want to work here. If you want to find to job with the highest bidder, it won't be us." While employees boast about the "laid-back" lifestyle of Los Angeles - with a dress code that is "very casual" - they also say that it takes "dedication" and "careful planning" to move ahead in this "talent-rich" company. Says a source, "It's hard work because the company's growing very fast and there's a huge amount of work to get done." For members of the production staff, 10 hours a day is "not unusual" and "pressure can be high." Perks include stock in the company, movie screening, and food and beverages that are "stocked in the kitchens." Adds an insider, "The people are great and 'S,' 'K,' and 'G' are truly motivational, down-to-earth guys."

Tips from the inside

Where the jobs are

DreamWorks has operations in Glendale, Calif.; Beverly Hills; Universal City, Calif; Nashville, Tenn.; New York City; London, U.K.; and Toronto, Canada. The company's shrinking revenue has meant shrinking employee numbers for the studio, which downsized from 1,600 to 1,100 employees in 2003. However, DreamWorks is still hiring and openings are posted on the Job section of its website, www.dreamworks.com, for positions in departments ranging from business affairs to marketing. To check out job offerings at DreamWorks Animation, go to the new company's web site at www.dreamworksanimation.com, and peruse the list of available positions in its job section. (The most opportunities seem to be in Feature Animation Technology.)

DreamWorks also has internship opportunities posted on its website in various departments, including archives/theatres, business affairs, domestic theatrical distribution, finance/accounting, international theatrical marketing, marketing, television, theatrical creative/production and worldwide technical services. Requirements include full-time enrollment in a university, an academic major related to the department of interest, and the ability to work a minimum of 10 weeks. Students who intern during the fall or spring semesters must work from 12 to 24 hrs/week and receive class credit, while summer interns work a minimum of 40 hours/week and receive an hourly wage of $7.00. Make sure to check out the site if interested, because different internships have specific requirements that should be considered before applying. If animation is a main interest, go to the DreamWorks Animation web site, which also has a section on internships, although not as extensive.
