Latham & Watkins SURVEY SAYS

Vault’s Verdict: As one insider notes, “morale took a real pasting in 2009” after headline-making redundancies, but in 2011 the outlook among Lathamites seems downright buoyant. Not only is business booming, but the work is “intellectually interesting and challenging”, the environment relaxed and non-hierarchical, and the pay “exceptionally generous”. If there’s a downside, it’s no more than the obvious: the hours can be “craaaaaaaaaaaaazy”....

A lawyer’s life

•  “Junior attorneys/solicitors are given a great amount of responsibility and the firm does an exceptional job of challenging its associates.” – Associate

•  “The work and level of responsibility are amazing. Client interaction and partner care all rate very high. We work hard, but that’s the nature of a career in law.” – Associate

Tips from the inside

Vault’s Verdict: Recruitment at Latham entails a “robust” process, including interviews with a surprising number of associates and partners. But the firm isn’t looking for just intellectual ability and legal prowess; amiability, teamwork and a sense of humility also factor into hiring decisions.
