SURVEY SAYS

All good, considering...

Schiff Hardin is going through some changes, and it's not sitting well with everyone. "Schiff Hardin has some great things about it -- really smart, really decent, sincere people," says one source. "However, the firm is going through a major identity crisis right now that creates a lot tension and unhappiness at the firm. Schiff Hardin wants to compete with the big boys -- Kirkland, Jenner, Mayer Brown, Sidley -- but also wants to maintain its reputation for a small-firm atmosphere." Another attorney agrees. The firm, he says, "wants to play with the larger firms, but doesn't want to pay for it. While it gives associates a fair amount of experience, it has little or no structure for younger associates, leaving them aimlessly adrift in a sea of disinterested partners who merely pay lip service to mentoring." But others contend that "working at Schiff provides associates an opportunity not only to work on sophisticated legal issues, but also [to focus] on career development."

Schiff Hardin LLP Perspective

Getting Hired

Tips from the inside

Hiring Process

Like every other firm, Schiff Hardin "looks for law students who distinguish themselves academically." That means that the "lower 85 percent of non-top-10 schools need not apply." "If you are from a top school with decent grades and a journal or clerkship, you are a shoo-in," reports one source. "A mid-to-lower-tier school requires a higher ranking and more interesting experience." Schiff Hardin is said to look at the total package. "I think the firm looks to hire well rounded individuals who are academically solid but also successful in their personal lives and civic-minded, whether it be involved in their community, passionate about their hobbies, or involved in a neighborhood sports league or community organization," says one insider. You'd better be on your game with even the lowliest associate you meet. According to one contact, "It's a democratic place, where even first-year associates' opinions matter during the interview process."

Should I go to Law School?
My time working at a law firm really hasn't convinced me that most of what lawyers do, especially at the more junior levels, really requires much intellectual creativity at all. So, the first part of my question is: how fair do you think this assessment is?This first question is really a subsidiary to the larger question I'm mulling over: should I go to law school?
