Kenyon & Kenyon partner George Badenoch is representing Toyota in a case that threatens the company’s ability to import some of its hybrid cars. Paice LLC, a hybrid electric power tech company, owns a patent related to a part of Toyota’s hybrid engines. In 2005 Paice won a patent infringement case and was awarded damages and royalties on the Toyota Prius, Highlander and select Lexus models. Recently Paice filed a new complaint with the ITC in which it claims Toyota has again infringed a patent with its new Prius models as well as hybrid versions of the Camry and Lexus. The small tech company is now looking to stop the import of the Toyota hybrid cars in question, while Toyota claims that everything was settled back in 2005. The matter is still currently under investigation by the ITC.

Reports on the culture at Kenyon & Kenyon are mixed. One insider observes, "Socially, the firm culture is very easygoing, and partners and associates intermingle freely." A colleague reports, "Socially, the firm has a fairly collegial culture. Professionally, you are expected to be a grown-up and get on with your work responsibly - there is not a culture of looking over your shoulder the whole time." On the other hand, another associate contends that the firm "used to have more of a 'family feel.' Now it seems that everyone is worried about their job security, and the partners are all out for themselves." A senior associate notes, "There used to be much more socialization than there is now," and a midlevel says, "Lawyers used to socialize together; now they meet to maintain the appearance of socializing."

Kenyon & Kenyon is an intellectual property firm and, therefore, recruiting focuses on candidates with technical backgrounds. An "engineering or science background is almost required; everyone is now required to take the patent bar," says an insider. Another associate says, "The firm appears to be aiming at candidates with more pedigree than before. Having a technical degree is extremely favored." Reportedly, the firm scrutinizes an applicant's grades farther back than most firms: "The firm looks for strong undergrad grades in your technical courses," reports a midlevel associate.
