Associate Life
Vault’s Verdict: Associates describe Katten’s partners as generally respectful but there are concerns about a shortage of work.

Firm Culture & Associate Satisfaction
• “The work I'm assigned can be very interesting and challenging at times, but maintaining a steady flow of work is the most difficult challenge.”  - New Yorker
• “I really enjoy the work, and I feel like I have been able to make a worthwhile contribution despite my junior status. I regularly interact directly with clients, and I have played significant roles on drafting and preparing briefs and other documents in administrative proceedings.” - litigator
• “I like most of the people I work with. However, it has been difficult to find work to do in this current economic climate, so I don't think I've had a lot of opportunities to improve as a lawyer, develop my skills, or prove myself.”  - Chicagoan

Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP Perspective

Getting Hired

Tips from the inside

Katten’s “hiring standards have risen dramatically in the last few years with a new managing partner,” according to a junior associate. “Basically, someone has to come from the top echelon of a top tier law school and be well rounded.” If you’re in DC, the hiring process goes a little something like this: “If you are selected in an on-campus interview, your callback will consist of one-on-one interviews with approximately 3-4 associates and 2 partners in 15-minute intervals, as well as a more informal lunch in with two associates.” Keep in mind that “interviewers care a lot about character.” A Chicago contact adds, “I doubt they would hire the top student from Yale if they couldn't hold a conversation.”

Should I go to Law School?
My time working at a law firm really hasn't convinced me that most of what lawyers do, especially at the more junior levels, really requires much intellectual creativity at all. So, the first part of my question is: how fair do you think this assessment is?This first question is really a subsidiary to the larger question I'm mulling over: should I go to law school?
