SURVEY SAYS

Putting their Hertz into their work

Sources report that Hertz's hiring process is fairly relaxed. "The interview was very sales and customer service oriented. 'Describe a time when you had to deal with an irate customer.' Other than that it is very corporate," says one management trainee. "Only one interview with the general manager," says another. "Hertz/Enterprise and many other rental companies are renowned for their management training programs," notes one hire enrolled in the program. Another management trainee adds, "My duties were varied, and I had to adjust to each situation, from answering the ringing phones, renting cars to customers, picking up and dropping off customers at hotels and auto repair shops, getting oil changes for cars, and & vacuuming and washing cars by hand."

Fish & Richardson P.C. Perspective

Meaningful Responsibility at an Early Stage

Litigation associates at all levels argue dispositive motions, take depositions of experts and key inventors, take the lead in Markman hearings, and examine witnesses at trial. Junior associates meet clients and help form case strategy. Patent prosecutors have client contact immediately, and quickly take full responsibility for client and inventor meetings, portfolio strategy, and advocacy before the patent office, including examiner interviews. Corporate associates have early exposure to the entire deal process, with junior associates having immediate client contact and heavy involvement with transactions, including drafting significant documents and attending meetings and negotiations.

Tips from the inside

“The firm is looking to hire top-notch candidates who can think and aren't afraid to work hard when necessary,” according to a Dallas associate.  Also, if you’re looking to get into certain practice areas, be aware that “very few non-science majors are hired for the technical (patent prosecution and litigation) work,” according to a D.C. associate.  However, in addition to strong academic credentials, the impression you make during an interview can make or break you.  A midlevel associate advises, “Personality seems to mean more than credentials during the callback.  If the firm likes you, you'll get an offer the same day or the next day.”  Simply put, Fish & Richardson “wants only the best candidates,” so make sure you bring your A-game every step of the way.

Should I go to Law School?
My time working at a law firm really hasn't convinced me that most of what lawyers do, especially at the more junior levels, really requires much intellectual creativity at all. So, the first part of my question is: how fair do you think this assessment is?This first question is really a subsidiary to the larger question I'm mulling over: should I go to law school?
