ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

THE SCOOP

An influential player in the development of American intellectual property law, Fish & Richardson has evolved with the inventions of its clients: from the days of the Industrial Revolution through the dot-com boom (and subsequent subprime-propelled economic bust), the firm has remained a leader in patent law while adding a slew of other practice areas as the years have rolled by.

Fish First

Founded in Boston in 1878, Fish & Richardson’s early days were marked by its representation of giants of American innovation.

OUR SURVEY SAYS

Vault’s Verdict: If you’re looking to dive into high-profile, complex patent prosecution work at the start of your career, Fish & Richardson is the place to be. Associates love working alongside lovable nerds during the day and having the flexibility and autonomy to go home to their families at night.

Associate Life

Satisfaction
•  "I have a range of cases to pick from at FR. I can [choose] to be on cases with small teams, and so as a second-year I get to do fifth-year level work. Or I can [choose] to be on cases with larger interoffice teams, where I get to be part of enormously complex patent litigation at district courts and ITC levels."
•  "Great experience, clients, technologies and cases. Lots of opportunities junior and mid-level associates wouldn't find anywhere else."
•  "The learning curve is steep, but the work is extremely interesting and challenging."
•  "I love my job. I have been a part of many different cases in many different capacities, and the biggest challenge is my personal decisions on balancing my workload."

Tips from the inside

Vault’s Verdict: As you might expect for a premiere IP firm, a strong technical background is key to landing a gig at Fish & Richardson, especially for patent prosecution candidates. If you have a techie undergrad degree and strong law school grades, your chances are good (a technical background is not required for all practice areas).
