SURVEY SAYS

Associate Life
Vault’s Verdict: Associates seem to appreciate the supportive and professional culture at the firm. On the other hand, the decreasing availability of substantive work has taken a toll.

Firm Culture & Associate Satisfaction
• “People are very social, laid back, and supportive. The people make Dickstein a unique place to work and somewhere people want to stay for many years.” –Washington associate
• “Everyone at the firm is very nice and professional, for the most part. But some sections of the firm are very cliquish.” –litigation associate
• “The economy has certainly affected the quality and quantity of work at the firm. I still truly value and appreciate the people I work with and think that Dickstein is a unique firm in the world of medium to large firms in terms of its laid back culture, but the current economic situation is having a negative impact.” –senior associate

Tips from the inside

One Dickstein insider reports that, “like many other medium to large firms, [Dickstein] is very discriminating in its hiring. It is actually difficult to land a lateral or summer associate position.”  A cynical Washingtonian asserts that, “The firm seeks out those from the best law schools, regardless of social awkwardness or ability to fit in.” A senior associate cautions, “Call-backs are not easy. In-office interviews are generally yours to screw up.” In order to impress the hiring committee one associate believes a candidate must be “a creative thinker, self-starter, and have a good work ethic.”  Finally, a corporate associate notes, “Firm puts a premium on diversity hires so a minority candidate from a top 50 school has an excellent chance of getting hired. Otherwise, [the firm] prefers students from top 20 law schools with very good credentials.”

Should I go to Law School?
My time working at a law firm really hasn't convinced me that most of what lawyers do, especially at the more junior levels, really requires much intellectual creativity at all. So, the first part of my question is: how fair do you think this assessment is?This first question is really a subsidiary to the larger question I'm mulling over: should I go to law school?
