Walter Energy (formerly Walter Industries) is a holding company with interests in insurance and financing, coal mining, production of foundry and furnace coke, and water and gas piping products.  Its subsidiaries include Walter Mortgage Company, which provides financing, and Best Insurers, which supplies insurance.  Walter’s coal mining subsidiary, Jim Walter Resources, is one of the 25-largest coal mining operations in the United States, with two of the deepest vertical shaft coal mines in North America.  Black Warrior Methane extracts its product from the same mines.  Since emerging from bankruptcy, the company has sold off a number of units to alleviate its load of debt, and continued to “evaluate strategic alternatives for its financing and homebuilding business,” as mentioned in its 2006 annual report.  In 2009, the company announced that it has undergone rebranding, changing its name from Walter Industries to Walter Energy.
