Vault's Scoop
ABOUT THIS COMPANY:
A boutique firm operating from offices in New York City and Washington, D.C., Caplin & Drysdale primarily focuses on federal tax-related legal services. Since its founding in 1964 by Mortimer M. Caplin, a former Commissioner of Internal Revenue who served under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, the firm has recruited heavily from the top rungs of the IRS, as well as the U.S. Treasury and Justice departments. As the firm grew, capitalizing on its technical expertise and insider knowledge of how tax law is made and administered, it continued to hire former government lawyers. Today Caplin & Drysdale specializes in minimizing clients' tax liabilities, keeping abreast of ever-changing tax laws and finding innovative solutions to tax problems. At the same time, the firm maintains close ties to government officials of certain benefit to clients who are planning transactions, seeking rulings from the IRS, or trying to resolve tax controversies. Caplin & Drysdale's non-tax legal services include commercial litigation and corporate counseling. Matters handled by the civil litigation practice include those involving RICO, securities laws, ERISA, products liability, legal malpractice, bankruptcy, contract and other commercial disputes. Recently, the firm added a political activity practice group which advises clients on compliance with campaign finance and PAC laws, government ethics requirements, lobbying registration, and related government affairs issues.
