ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

More than just museums

When many people think of the Smithsonian, they probably envision their eighth-grade trip to the nation’s capital and visits to museums.  The Smithsonian Institution administers galleries and museums—19 of them in fact—but it also has nine research centers.  These include the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Maryland and the Tropical Research Institute in Panama.  The institution also includes the National Zoo.  The institution runs traveling exhibitions on topics such as “Key Ingredients: America by Food” and “New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music.”  The Smithsonian’s collections encompass more than 136 million objects, which include Dorothy’s ruby slippers, Abraham Lincoln’s top hat, Kermit the Frog, the Star Spangled Banner, a lunar rock sample (which visitors may touch) and the Hope Diamond (which visitors may not touch).

Tips from the inside

Trust fund babies and federal employees

Information about careers at the Smithsonian is online at www.sihr.si.edu.  The Smithsonian has two types of positions: trust fund positions, which are paid for through the Smithsonian’s endowment and supplemented by funds from sources such as fundraising; and federal positions, which are funded by the government.  Some federal jobs are open to all candidates, whereas others are only open to individuals who have federal employment status.  About two-thirds of the jobs at the Smithsonian are federal jobs.
