More than just museumsWhen many people think of the Smithsonian, they probably envision their eighth-grade trip to the nation’s capital and visits to museums. The Smithsonian Institution administers galleries and museums—19 of them in fact—but it also has nine research centers. These include the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Maryland and the Tropical Research Institute in Panama. The institution also includes the National Zoo. The institution runs traveling exhibitions on topics such as “Key Ingredients: America by Food” and “New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music.” The Smithsonian’s collections encompass more than 136 million objects, which include Dorothy’s ruby slippers, Abraham Lincoln’s top hat, Kermit the Frog, the Star Spangled Banner, a lunar rock sample (which visitors may touch) and the Hope Diamond (which visitors may not touch).
