ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

THE SCOOP

Each year, a significant chunk of the world’s dealmaking—major mergers and acquisitions, antitrust and shareholder litigation, big name restructurings and multi-billion-dollar real estate ventures—gets cranked through the well-greased machine that is Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz. Manning the apparatus are a gifted few, whose compensation far outstrips industry standards. While it may not be the biggest or the highest revenue-maker as a firm, it is the most profitable place in the world to practice law. Wachtell Lipton is one of the smallest firms in the AmLaw 100, but it is continually one of the top firms (and usually the top firm) when it comes to PPP, and it stands above the going market rate for first-year associate salaries.

Wachtell SURVEY SAYS

Vault’s Verdict: Associates rave about the level of responsibility and partner access they are given from day one. While the hours are grueling, colossal bonuses help ease the pain.

Associate Life

Satisfaction
• “I honestly cannot imagine a better place to be a junior associate. The level of client interaction I’ve had right from the beginning has been amazing.”
• “The work is interesting at times, but the unpredictability (and large amount) of hours required make it a difficult work environment.”
• “No other firm offers a higher level of involvement and experience on ‘top-of-the-fold’ matters.”
• “Being a corporate lawyer has its ups and downs, but if you are going to be a corporate lawyer, Wachtell is the ideal place to do it. The most interesting work, the smartest people, the most responsibility and the best compensation and benefits of any New York firm by about a mile.”
