Vault's Verdict: At S&C, associates’ biggest gripe is not receiving pre-recession bonuses for pre-recession hours—but prestige, brilliant colleagues and access to deals and cases that make headlines keep them coming back for more.

• "I am well paid and for the most part well treated. The substance of my work and the need to be constantly available make me slightly less than satisfied."
• "Associates from the start are given tremendous responsibility in my practice area (Financial Institutions) and significant client contact, which only grows with seniority. The work is challenging and fulfilling."
• "Work is very substantive and engaging with a large amount of responsibility and client contact early in one’s career, but hours are long."
• "In an environment where profits per partner have increased substantially since 2008, but associate pay has been reduced while the number of hours per associate has increased, it is difficult to be satisfied—this goes for most top-tier New York firms. S&C, however, should do better given how well its partners have done."
