ABOUT THIS COMPANY:

THE SCOOP

Morgan Lewis has branched out from its Philadelphia roots to build an international network of offices stretching from Beijing to Brussels. Today, Morgan Lewis’s strengths include labor, litigation, tax, intellectual property rights, IPOs, M&A and white collar.

From Brotherly Love to Global Love

Morgan Lewis was founded in Philadelphia in March 1873 by Charles Eldridge Morgan, Jr., a Civil War vet, and Francis Draper Lewis, a cotton merchant’s son. Ten years later, Morgan and Lewis hired Morris Rex Bockius, who was the driving force behind the firm for nearly four decades in the 1900s.

Morgan Lewis SURVEY SAYS

Vault’s Verdict: Morgan Lewis associates enjoy their above-market bonuses, collegial work environment, and pro bono opportunities so much that they don’t want to leave—unfortunately, most say they have no idea whether there’s any hope of partnership in their futures.

Associate Life

Satisfaction

“I am extremely content with the quality of work I have and the people with whom I work. The compensation is good and the work-life balance is pretty decent most of the time. Having said that, partnership prospects seem so dim even for associates who have been working hard and delivering for years and years, and this causes a great deal of uncertainty and general malaise among associates.”

“My work is incredibly interesting, but as with any BigLaw job, the long hours can be grueling and certain partners are not always flexible or appreciative of associate efforts.”

“Morgan Lewis in New York is generally a satisfying place to work. Our clients send us interesting work, and partners give associates meaningful roles in cases.”

“Interesting and varied work makes the weeks cruise by. I am given a pretty long leash, even as a second-year associate. Hours are typical for BigLaw. Compensation seems fair. I like my colleagues. Not many complaints.”
